Personal narrative by Philip, 2023
I'm an artist born and raised in St. Louis. I always heard about Cementland from my friends and always wanted to go, but never did until recently. I heard it was being demolished and felt that if I never did a photoshoot here, my work will be an incomplete representation of the city where I grew up which I love so much. Even though it's an "if you know you know" kind of place, Cementland to me is one of the most iconic landmarks of St. Louis, especially for artists. All of my artist friends from growing up have been here and still talk about it all the time. I was blown away by the beauty of this place. What nobody tells you is when you're in it (before you climb anything), you can look in every direction and not see the outside world. It feels like being in a parallel universe. There is nothing like it. Cementland being demolished is incredibly sad, but it makes sense to me. The world as we know it isn't fit for a place like that and doesn't deserve it. Cementland is transcendental.
