Personal narrative by Iris, 2023
Cementland was mythical. We all knew and loved the City Museum and had heard about Cementland as the mysterious second project and the site of the unfortunate death of Bob Cassily so naturally as bored suburban high schoolers looking for danger, we were drawn to it. I only managed to go once as a 17 year old which I deeply regret. I went with two others, fitted out for adventure and freezing temperatures but most importantly for the intriguing and edgy photo shoot opportunities. One of my friends had been there before and acted as guide, insisting that the only possible route was across this small channel of water. Both friends waded across in socks and shoes but I took mine off, walked across, and put them back on after drying my feet. The frigid water was painful to the touch but my feet were dry and warm after that while my friends' were soaking wet for the rest of the day! We spent hours exploring the landscape and climbing silos. We took loads of photos and ran into other explorers. It was an incredible wasteland, beautifully articulated. You could see the bones of another City Museum-like landscape all laid out. It's such a shame the work was never completed. We lost something truly special
