Personal narrative by L.A. Trask, 2023
Back in highschool my friends and I almost idolized Cementland as this legendary and mysterious place that was ripe for rules to be broken. We snuck in many times and had goals of exploring every nook and cranny and entering every building. I can confidently say we have been on top of every building there including the smoke stack. (Believe it or not, you used to be able to climb a metal ladder all the way to the top of the smoke stack before it was removed). We almost froze our hands off climbing to the top of it in late December one year. Nonetheless, the stunning view of all of Downtown St. Louis from the top made the suffering well worth it. It’s a better view than the view from the Arch. I’m not exaggerating. Someone else had even decorated it with Christmas lights on top of the tower, that’s how we knew it must be possible to reach the top in the first place. We also stumbled upon a full size boat hidden somewhere in Cementland, but if you haven’t discovered it yourself I can’t share exactly where it is because that would ruin the true joy that exploring Cementland brought me and many others in our degenerate youth.
